Thus, my iPod playlist is currently an amalgam of Curzon (Op. His self-effacing style works well in this repertoire, as it does in his separate recording of Schubert’s Piano Sonata D. 142 #1 and #2 “breathe” properly and gets the dotted rhythm just right in Op. Still, Curzon is the only one I’ve heard who lets Op. He plays all of them superbly, the only major problem being poor sound quality throughout Op. The closest I’ve found to an ideal set is the one by Clifford Curzon on Philips’ Greatest Pianists series. 142 #2, and find novel ways to butcher the exceptional Op. I find that they typically over-sentimentalize Op. One frustration of mine, when it comes to these pieces, is that no modern pianist performs all eight of them quite to my tastes. These magnificent little gems sum up Schubert’s art so well: each one has its own unmistakable personality, yet all are imbued with a sense of wistfulness, a certain euphoria-tinged-with-anguish, and of course – this being Schubert – a rich and effortless lyricism. That’s still a strong contender, but as I listen to Franz Schubert’s Impromptus Op. ![]() Recently, in response to some question or other, I said that my Desert Island Disc would probably be Bach’s Cello Suites played by Mstislav Rostropovich.
